About WASUB II

WaSub II consists of a group of students of the TU Delft. Our aim is to build a human powered submarine that will break the world speed record of 7.2 knots (13.4 km/h) during the international human powered submarine race which will be held in July 2006 in the Offshore Modeling Basin in Escondido, California. The breaking of the world speed record has to be the primary result of using superior technology in the design, but a strong pilot will of course also be a requirement. We will achieve this by using existing knowledge optimally and if necessary expand this knowledge by doing research.

In 2004 a group of TU Delft students started with the design and building of the first Dutch human powered submarine, the WaSub. With this submarine during the international submarine race in 2005 in Washington a large amount of prizes were won, including the prize for "best overall performance".

WaSub provides students with a good opportunity to build a real design, and use the knowledge that they have learned. The project embraces a number of different disciplines; from fluid dynamics, process control and actuators to ergonomics. No wonder that students in this team originate from different studies. The fact that students of the TU are involved with this kind of project is also because they can prove themselves to the world, which is also of importance for students outside of the team. It highlights the general qualities of the studies and students, which can definitely be of use when convincing a future employer.

For sponsors WaSub is a nice opportunity to show that they value technological innovations. WaSub has been frequently been in the media and this is thus a relatively cheep way of advertising. Finally it is the perfect way to get in to contact with talented students. For the rest of the Netherlands (and Belgium) we also have something to offer. Projects like this put the Netherlands in the picture as a producer of high performing technology, and this is good for us all. But there is of course also the sensation. We may be lesser known then the Dutch national soccer team, but we do win the finals. And what is nicer for a small country, than to outperform the rest of the world…..?

Goals:
  • Improve the current design and add air film drag reduction and an autopilot system
  • Compete in the Human Powered Submarine race 2006 in California and beat out own world record
  • Inspire other students and organizations
  • Secure the continuity of WaSub
A long term goal of WaSub is the founding of a human powered submarine race in Europe.
